OVERVIEW

DOGTAG is a competitive free for all Roblox game which is being made by me and one other developer. The game can be best described as jet dogfighting combined with Tron. Players fight 5 other players in an enclosed arena where all players flight paths leave behind permanent laser trails that if collided with immediately eliminates the player.

The game's fast-paced gameplay requires players to constantly reposition to avoid being locked onto by enemy players' guns, all while avoiding an increasingly dense spaghetti-like mesh of lasers output by opponents and their own flight path.

The game can can be played in online multiplayer or against AI opponents. Players using resources earned from their battles are able to unlock a library of jets each with their own unique skins and traits. Players have the ability to customize their jets in a variety of ways and can upgrade their jets performance, weapons, agility. Additionally, players are able to customize their jets cosmetically in a variety of ways, each jet has unique skins which can be mixed and matched by the player to create their ultimate vehicle. Beyond the jet itself players can also customize their jets weapon sounds, trail skin, and in game music.

About

About

DOGTAG is currently in development with significant progress being made since we began. My teammate is responsible for a majority of the games programming, while I am responsible for the game's art. Our workflow on this game has been centered heavily around the use of AI tools for gameplay programming and UI. My work is mostly split between Blender, Substance Painter, and Roblox Studio. In order to stand out in the very saturated Roblox game market, we are building player incentives and exciting rewards to earn. My goal on DOGTAG has been to make it one of the best looking Roblox games out there and make the game feel more rewarding and exciting compared to what is offered by other Roblox games.

A significant amount of Roblox games feel like they were made quite lazily and offer little in terms of unique gameplay. This might be because a Roblox targets a young audience which plays on various screen sizes and formats. Making a game for Roblox has challenged me because of the platform's unique limitations. Roblox Studio is missing some features and capabilities which are standard on game engines like Unreal Engine or Unity. I have had to pay close attention to the way I build my models and their topology. Working in Roblox has forced me to adapt my workflow, and be more considerate off performance constraints. Making a game look good in Roblox is not easy, this is why most games in Roblox don't good.

The game can be played on Roblox right now, give it a try, its available on Roblox on mobile, PC, and MAC.

My Role

My Role

Main Roles:
3D Artist, Technical Artist, Game Designer

  • Created full asset pipeline from 3D modeling in Blender, texturing in Substance Painter, asset management in Google Drive to final implementation and setup in engine

  • Designed and 3D modeled 7+ jets inside Blender, texturing inside of Substance Painter

  • 3D modeled the games central lobby area inside of Blender, texturing it inside of substance painter. This was the most challenging part of development on the game so far due to the models complexity and size. The models size and need for multiple texture sets along with the difficulties Roblox Studio and its lack of fundamental game engine tools like mirroring objects made this a very iterative process.

  • Worked with the other developer on every part of the game's design, from core mechanics to camera behavior, music, narrative, and art direction

  • Designed several UI elements for gameplay and menu screens

  • Using my skills in music production which I have been developing on the side as a hobby for the last couple years I have made a few songs for this game
